Shreegauri
Sawant
Shreegauri Sawant is a transgender and transgender activist who became popular when she recently featured in an ad by Vicks (viewed on YouTube over 10.5 million times). Despite facing criticism from her family, she completed her transition and later also formed an NGO of her own called 'Sakhi Char Chowghi' in Malad, Mumbai. Her motto was to provide a space of freedom to all transgenders, hijras and men who have sex with men (MSMs) in the city.
In 2001, she adopted Gayatri, her 16-year-old daughter, after she was left orphaned due to her mother’s death because of HIV, who was a sex worker. Gayatri's grandmother was about to sell Gayatri when Shreegauri decided to save the little girl and adopted her. As a transgender, it wasn't easy for her, adoption by a transgender not being legal and being looked down upon people while walking down the streets with her daughter. But a proud mother, Shreegauri raised Gayatri like every mother does, fighting all odds. Today, Gayatri studies in a well-known school and lives in a hostel. It simply adds dignity to the phrase - 'A mother is a mother' and for sure like Shreegauri herself says - "There isn't any assigned gender to be one."
